Green bonds in Africa

Scoping The Sustainable Finance Landscape

Africa is expected to be hardest hit by the adverse impacts of climate change if significant investments in mitigation and adaptation does not take place. The issuance of green bonds as a tool for unlocking significant capital for sustainability-related investments has been gaining traction in Africa in recent years, but the market for green bonds in Africa is still underdeveloped. Nevertheless, a growing number of African states are either planning to issue green bonds or developing their own national guidelines and therefore the prospects for growth are high.

This paper by Research Fellow George Marbuah at Stockholm Sustainable Finance Centre, maps the African landscape to understand the structure and development of the green bonds market and the challenges and opportunities it faces. The report arrives at several recommendations on how to develop the African green bond market at rates consistent with global trends.
