During this webinar, we will reflect on the key findings of the report about the role of Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) in Africa. The high-level seminar panel will hear from esteemed speakers from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, The Association of European DFIs (EDFI), the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) invest in private sector firms and funds for which they expect a financial return, but DFI shareholders also expect DFIs to contribute to development objectives such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). But what is the role of DFIs in supporting the objectives of national development plans in developing countries? What are the challenges and opportunities? Can DFIs take steps to increase the degree of alignment between DFIs’ investment flows and country-level strategic sectors to further SDGs by responding to recipient country needs and priorities?

In this webinar hosted by Stockholm Sustainable Finance Centre, Stockholm Environment Institute and Overseas Development Institute, researchers from SEI and ODI will present the findings from the new report Understanding the role of development finance institutions in promoting development: an assessment of three African countries. The report maps different financial flows together with a review of different country development plans to determine the extent of alignment as well as highlighting opportunities for DFIs to invest in strategic sectors.
